Life insurance
Make sure your ʻohana is taken care of.
Life insurance replaces your income, pays off the mortgage, or covers final expenses so your family isn't left with the bill. I'll help you choose the right type and amount.
Types of coverage
Which kind fits you
- Term life
- Coverage for a set number of years, like 10, 20 or 30. The lowest cost per dollar of coverage. A good fit while kids are young or a mortgage is open.
- Whole life
- Lifelong coverage with fixed premiums and cash value that grows at a guaranteed rate.
- Universal and indexed universal life
- Lifelong coverage with flexible premiums. Indexed versions credit interest based on a market index, with a floor that protects against losses.
- Final expense
- A smaller whole life policy, often $5,000 to $40,000, meant to cover funeral costs and final bills. Simple health questions, no exam.
- Living benefits
- Many policies let you use part of the death benefit early if you're diagnosed with a chronic, critical or terminal illness.
How much?
A quick way to estimate
Add up four things. It won't be exact, but it gives us a starting point.
- Debts such as car loans and credit cards, plus final expenses
- Income your family would need replaced, times the number of years
- Mortgage balance
- Education you'd like to fund for your kids
Then subtract savings and any coverage you already have through work. Group life often ends when you leave the job.
Questions
Common life insurance questions
Do I need a medical exam?
Not always. Many companies offer accelerated underwriting that uses your answers and records instead of an exam, especially for younger, healthier applicants.
I have coverage at work. Is that enough?
Often it's one or two times your salary, and it usually doesn't follow you if you leave. Most families need more, and owning your own policy keeps it in your control.
Can I buy a policy for my parents?
Yes, with their consent and participation in the application. Final expense coverage is a common choice.
