Health coverage · business owners & 1099
Health coverage for people who work for themselves.
Contractors, real estate agents, tradespeople, consultants, rideshare drivers and small business owners don't get a plan handed to them. I'll help you find coverage that fits your budget and the way you work.
Who this is for
If you sign your own paycheck
1099 contractors
Real estate agents, trades, consultants, gig and rideshare drivers. Your income moves around, and your coverage has to work with that.
Sole owners and LLCs
Coverage for you and your family when there's no employer plan, with costs you can plan around.
Owners with employees
Coverage for yourself, plus help sorting out what Hawaiʻi requires you to offer your team.
Your two main options
Health sharing or health insurance
They work differently, and the right one depends on your health, your income and your budget. I'll help you compare them side by side.
Impact Health Sharing
A not-for-profit healthcare sharing community. It is not insurance. Members pay a monthly share, and eligible medical bills are shared by the community.
- Your household first pays an annual Primary Responsibility Amount, chosen from four levels
- After that, eligible bills are shared at 90%, and your 10% co-share is capped at $5,000 per household per year
- Includes an annual wellness visit and routine labs, unlimited telehealth, $0 generic prescriptions, and dental and vision savings
- Rooted in Christian values and open to anyone who agrees to its guidelines and shared beliefs
Marketplace health insurance
ACA plans through HealthCare.gov, regulated as insurance in Hawaiʻi.
- Covers pre-existing conditions, with no health questions
- Premium tax credits can lower the cost, depending on household income
- Bought during fall open enrollment, or after a qualifying life event
- Often the better fit for ongoing health conditions or lower incomes
Good to know
Before you choose
- Health sharing isn't insurance
- Sharing of bills isn't guaranteed and follows Impact's guidelines, which set what is eligible to share. Read the guidelines before you join, and ask me anything you're unsure about.
- If you have employees
- Hawaiʻi's Prepaid Health Care Act generally requires employers to offer qualifying health insurance to employees who work 20 or more hours a week. A health sharing membership may not meet that requirement, so let's talk about group options for your team.
- Ongoing health conditions
- If you or a family member has a condition that needs regular care, compare carefully. Marketplace plans must cover pre-existing conditions.
- Networks and doctors
- I check that your Oʻahu and neighbor-island doctors work with whichever option you choose.
Tell me a little
Not sure which fits? Let's compare.
Tell me about your household and your work. I'll put health sharing and insurance options side by side, usually within one business day.

Important: Impact Health Sharing is not insurance and is not regulated as insurance. Payment of medical bills is not guaranteed, and sharing is subject to Impact's guidelines. A health sharing membership is not a substitute for ACA-compliant health insurance. Travis Kimura may receive compensation when you join through this site.
