A holistic approach
Policies work better when they're chosen together.
Every policy should have a job, and no two should be doing the same one. Here are a few ways the pieces fit, and the gaps I find most often.
Pairings that work
How the pieces fit
A Medicare plan and a hospital plan
Many Medicare Advantage plans charge a daily copay for hospital stays. A hospital indemnity plan can pay you cash for those same days.
Hospital plansLife insurance that helps while you're living
Some life policies let you use part of the benefit early for a chronic or terminal illness. That can double as a long-term care plan.
Extended careIncome that pays for care
An annuity can turn a lump sum into monthly income that covers Medicare premiums, supplemental coverage, or care costs later on.
AnnuitiesSelf-employed health coverage and a hospital plan
A lower-cost option like health sharing or a high-deductible plan can make sense when a hospital or accident plan helps cover your share if something happens.
Health coverageWhat I look for
Gaps I find most often
- Life insurance that ends with the job
- Group life through work is often one or two times salary and usually stops when you leave.
- No plan for long-term care
- Medicare doesn't pay for most long-term custodial care, and Hawaiʻi care costs are among the highest in the country.
- Hospital costs on Medicare Advantage
- Daily inpatient copays can add up quickly during a longer stay.
- Old beneficiaries
- An ex-spouse or a parent who has passed is still listed on a policy more often than you'd think.
- Savings with no protection
- Money you'll need for income soon may be fully exposed to a market drop.
